Abstract:
The crisis that erupted in 1905 became a major test for the Russian Empire. It affected densely populated regions characterized by extreme national and religious diversity, exacerbating interethnic relations among the inhabitants of these areas. This fate also befell the Caucasus. The most tense situation developed in Transcaucasia, where relations between the Azerbaijani and Armenian populations escalated. At the same time, pogroms and mass riots occurred in the northern part of the Caucasus Ridge, although they were less widespread. This article is dedicated to the analysis of interethnic conflicts in the Terek region during the years of the 1905-1907 revolution. During this period, Russia faced a wave of socio-political changes, which led to an intensification of interethnic contradictions and the emergence of conflicts, especially in multinational regions such as Terek. The author examines the factors contributing to the rise of interethnic tensions, including socio-economic conditions, ethnic differences, and national claims. Particular attention is given to the methods employed by the central authorities to resolve conflicts, ranging from political repression to attempts at reforms aimed at improving dialogue among ethnic groups. In conclusion, the article emphasizes that despite the government’s efforts, the conflicts were not resolved and became one of the prerequisites for broader socio-political catastrophes that occurred in Russia in the following years. The findings of this research are important not only for understanding the historical processes of the early 20th century but also for analyzing contemporary interethnic relations in the post-Soviet space.
