PRACTICES OF ACTUALIZATION OF TRADITIONAL CULTURE IN THE YOUTH ENVIRONMENT OF THE NORTH CAUCASUS

Khapsaeva, Dana V.
Kavkaz Forum. 2024. Issue 20.
Abstract:
A noticeable phenomenon of public life in the North Caucasus is the interest of the
younger generation in ethno-cultural values, which is manifested in various modern
practices aimed at actualizing tradition, its renewal and active use in cultural and
educational content, in the field of tangible and intangible heritage, tourism and
entrepreneurship. The article analyzes the results of grant competitions of the Presidential
Fund for Cultural Initiatives (PFCI) for the period from 2021 to 2024 in order to identify
topics dedicated to the traditional culture of the peoples of the North Caucasus, as well
as telegram channels promoting various revival practices. Applications submitted for
grants from PFCI contain justifications that determine the vision of young people of the
social significance of tradition, ways to actualize and use it creatively. This non-traditional
source makes it possible to compare the ideas and ethno-cultural needs of young people
in different subjects of the North Caucasus Federal District, to determine common trends
and differences due to historical and cultural circumstances. Agreeing with the opinion
widespread in the specialized literature that interest in traditional culture is a form of
presentation of ethnic identity and a reaction to the risks of globalization, we note that the
considered practices of actualization of traditional culture are not closed to communication
with other peoples and cultures, but, on the contrary, imply wide popularization and
interaction with them. In addition, they do not preserve tradition, but try to creatively fit it
into modern life.
Keywords: North Caucasus, cultural heritage, revival practices, creative industries.
