SOVIET EXPERIENCE OF TRAINING ENGINEERING AND TECHNICAL PERSONNEL IN THE 1950-1960-S (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE NORTH CAUCASUS MINING AND METALLURGICAL INSTITUTE).

Abstract:
The article examines the training of engineering and technical personnel for the USSR national economy at the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgical Institute in the 1950-s and 1960s. It is emphasized that the relevance of this study stems from thematic parallels with contemporary challenges of training qualified personnel in the context of the new technological modernization of the country’s economy. It is noted that during the scientific and technological revolution of the 1950-s and 1960s, the accelerated development of heavy industry significantly increased the demand for engineers. This became the motivating factor in the transformation of the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgical Institute into one of the leading centers for training personnel for the mining and non-ferrous metallurgy industries of the USSR. During this period, the institute underwent significant structural and organizational changes. Along with the faculties that had existed since the early 1930-s, new educational units were formed, and the range of technical training areas for specialists was significantly expanded. It is noted that the institute’s material, technical and structural modernization has ensured a quantitative increase in student numbers. The student body has grown nearly fivefold over two decades. Moreover, since the late 1960-s, evening and correspondence programs outnumbered full-time students. Given this, the necessary level of training for qualified engineers and construction workers was ensured through the improvement of educational and production programs, forms, and methods of instruction. The conclusion is that, as a result of the implementation of a phased strategy in Soviet educational policy in the 1950-s and 1960-s to transition engineering and technical training to innovative forms and methods of instruction, expanding the range of specializations in accordance with the demands of the scientific and technological revolution, the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgical Institute became important links in the system of higher technical education. It addressed the practical challenges of training professional specialists aimed at ensuring the technological sovereignty of the USSR.
