This article analyzes for the first time the significance of stone as a sacred cratophany in the Ossetian ethnoreligious tradition in general, and megaliths in particular. In the Ossetian traditional religious system, stones, cliffs, and ancient stone structures (megalithic elements, menhirs, steles, and cupstones) are perceived as living receptacles of divine power, boundaries of sacred worlds, and signs of the presence of patron spirits. The relevance of this study stems from the complex, syncretic nature of Ossetian traditional beliefs, as well as the need to study their influence on contemporary social and spiritual culture in the context of monotheistic imagery. Christianity and Islam did not erase the archaic sacred significance of stones and megaliths in the Ossetian tradition, but rather integrated them through religious syncretism, reinterpreting ancient sanctuaries (kuvændon) in the context of monotheistic imagery. Christian crosses often appeared on ancient stone sanctuaries, and the cult sites themselves were sometimes erected on the foundations of old churches. The origin of vertical megaliths (tsyrts) is examined. The view that tsyrts are a relic of the Scythian tradition is erroneous. The assumption of a Christian and Muslim origin for syrt megaliths with round tops is analyzed. The novelty of this study of the sacred significance of megalithic stones in the Ossetian religious tradition lies in its interdisciplinary synthesis of archaeological, ethnographic, and mythological data, allowing us to rethink stone sculptures not simply as silent funerary markers, but as active structuring elements of a living sacred landscape. The obtained conclusions, on the one hand, contribute to the development of problems of comparative religious studies by involving Ossetian folklore and mythological material in this type of research, and on the other hand, they expand the approach to the study of Ossetian ethnic religion.
