STRUCTURAL AND SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF DIALECTAL NAMES OF NATURAL PHENOMENA IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE.

Abstract:
The relevance of this research stems from the need to systematize and synthesize the extensive material collected by scholars throughout the history of studying Ossetian dialects. Comparative studies of Ossetian dialects are particularly relevant given the deformation of territorial language varieties due to intense Russian-language influence, the impact of the literary language, and the integration of dialects. A comprehensive study of the vocabulary of a specific dialect, located within the common space of a given language, allows for the introduction of dialectal factual material into scientific circulation, which facilitates a more in-depth study of the vocabulary of a language or dialect as a holistic system. Furthermore, the lexical system of dialects and subdialects, like that of the language as a whole, is fluid and unstable. The research’s scientific novelty lies primarily in the fact that Ossetian linguistics currently lacks studies devoted to a comparative analysis of the vocabulary of the two main dialects of the Ossetian language: Iron and Digor. Furthermore, this study is the first to analyze dialectal vocabulary using the lexical-semantic and thematic methods of word association. The aim of the study is a systemic comparative analysis of the vocabulary of the thematic group “Natural phenomena: precipitation” of the Iron and Digor dialects of the Ossetian language, with the identification of phonetic, grammatical, word-formation and semantic differences. The study utilized linguistic observation, descriptive analysis, and distributional analysis. A structural-semantic approach was employed to examine the semantics of the group’s core lexemes. Illustrative linguistic data were collected through continuous sampling and interviews with informants. The study formed and structured the thematic group of words «Natural phenomena: precipitation» in the Ossetian language; the semiotic structure of the group’s core lexemes was examined; their derivational chains were determined; and phonetic, word-formation, and lexicalsemantic differences in dialectal names were analyzed.
