K.L. KHETAGUROV’S «OSSETIAN LYRE» IN RUSSIAN: ON THE HISTORY OF PUBLICATIONS AND TRANSLATION RECEPTION.

Abstract:
This article presents an overview of Russian-language translations of works from K.L. Khetagurov’s «Ossetian Lyre,» spanning a 125-year publication history – from the first translations, completed during the poet’s lifetime, to modern editions. Key stages of translation reception are highlighted: pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and post-Soviet. Particular attention is paid to the role of state cultural policy in the translation of national literatures and its influence on translation activity, including in relation to the works of K. Khetagurov. The translation strategies used by various authors in translating Kosta’s poetry are considered. The focus is on certain translations by P. Panchenko, B. Irinin, A. Akhmatova, N. Zabolotsky, L. Ozerov, and others. It is shown that translations focused on creative reinterpretation enriched the Russian poetic tradition, but often at the expense of the national identity of the original. The original’s conceptual meaning was ignored in a number of translations, which altered the author’s intentions and overall simplified K. Khetagurov’s style. At the same time, all translations from Kosta Khetagurov’s works, produced at different times using different techniques and varying in ideological and aesthetic quality, testify to the enduring interest in Khetagurov’s poetic legacy in the Russian-language cultural space. The history of translations from «The Ossetian Lyre» is a vivid example of the dynamic intercultural interaction between the literatures of the peoples of Russia.
