LEXICAL-SEMANTIC AND STRUCTURAL WORD-FORMATION FEATURES OF MILL TERMINOLOGY IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE.

Abstract:
This article presents a linguistic analysis of Ossetian terminology related to mills and the process of grain milling, representing a distinct terminological microsystem within the traditional economic vocabulary. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that this lexical layer, despite the presence of isolated etymological commentaries in the works of V. I. Abaev, has not yet been subjected to a systematic lexical-semantic and word-formation description. The aim of the study is to identify, systematize, and classify the corpus of Ossetian mill terminology; define its lexical-semantic subgroups and productive structural models of nomination; and describe it as a coherent terminological field using a comprehensive ethnolinguistic approach. The study material consists of a corpus of 181 lexical units extracted using a continuous sampling method from Ossetian dictionaries, partially from historical and ethnographic sources. As a result, seven lexical-semantic subgroups were identified. The first is «Names of the mill by type and mode of operation»; the second is «Names of the structural parts and mechanisms of the mill»; the third is «Acoustic nominations of the mill»; the fourth is «Nominations of a person associated with mill production»; the fifth is «Spatial nominations associated with the mill»; the sixth is «Economic and functional nominations»; the seventh is «Ritual and cult nominations associated with the mill». It has been established that the dominant structural model of the nomination is the genitive syntactic construction «kuyroy + noun», along with the productive model of word composition; the etymology of the basic term, dating back to the pre-Indo-European Caucasian substrate, is confirmed. The obtained results can be used in compiling specialized dictionaries of the Ossetian language, as well as in further ethnolinguistic studies of the material culture of the Ossetians.
