Abstract:
This article examines the process of changing the traditional women’s clothing of the inhabitants of the North Caucasus within the framework of the concept of «new mountain woman». The article presents an analysis of the measures taken by the Soviet government to introduce new clothes into the life of a mountain woman, as a marker of «visual culture» that fixed the position of a mountain woman in the Soviet space. The methodological basis of this study is the method of system analysis, which allowed us to consider the transformation of Goryanok clothing through the implementation of the ideological doctrine of the formation of a new Soviet identity, in the context of which regional strategies were developed for the successful implementation of the concept of «Soviet woman». It is updated that the changes in the clothes of the Goryans were considered as difficulties in the process of universalizing the way of life of the peoples of the North Caucasus, based on customs, the bulk of which were considered by the authorities as remnants. In the course of the research, the gradual introduction of women’s outerwear into the mountain lifestyle was analyzed, which played an important role in involving the Highlanders in public production. It is concluded that the functionality and versatility of mass-produced clothing in the period under study should have offset the difference between traditional national and European costume. The introduction of coats and other types of new women’s clothing was difficult, and there were outright «kinks» in the methods of breaking the old way of life, slowing down the process of transformation of women’s clothing. It was only in the mid-1930s that mountain women, who were consistently involved in collectivization and industrialization, mastered the models of women’s clothing proposed by mass Soviet production, since convenience and versatility became the main requirement of a woman involved in a new social and public space.
