OSSETIANS-GEORGIANS: ANALYSIS OF THE PHENOMENON

Ktsoeva, Sultana G.
Kavkaz Forum. 2025. Issue 23.
Abstract:

The article analyzes for the first time the Ossetian Georgian sect, which existed, according to the source (a publicistic essay by D. Z. Bakradze), in the 40-50s of the XIXth century in the mountain societies of South Ossetia, and then, leaving no trace, disappeared. Based on the theoretical model of sectarianism by M. Eliade and other religious scholars, the author cites possible reasons for the formation of a religious quasi-group in that period. One of the important objectives of the study was the desire to answer the question of whether the Georgians were a sect formed on the ideological basis of Orthodox Christianity or whether they were an offshoot of the ethnic religion of the Ossetians, which would make the analyzed phenomenon doubly unique. As part of the main goal of the study, the reasons for the emergence of the Georgian group were analyzed, as well as the mechanisms of action of the analyzed reasons on the development of the phenomenon. An important part of the study is a comparative analysis of Georgianism and Whips with the subsequent identification of their similarities. The relevance of this study is due to the ever-growing interest in studying the problems of the history of ethnicity and, in particular, the religious aspects of the life of the ethnic group. The novelty of the study is due to the fact that the phenomenon of the Georgian sect is subjected to scientific analysis for the first time. One of the most important conclusions regarding the analysis of the specific features of Georgianism is the conclusion about its similarity with the cult practice of the sect of Whips. Apparently, the spread of whips in Georgia to some extent provoked the formation of something similar in the Ossetian societies of South Ossetia, which gave rise to a unique phenomenon: in addition to a peculiar form of protest against social injustice, existing religious institutions, poverty and economic crises, Georgianism expressed the desire to preserve the ethnic identity of the Ossetians in Georgia and more broadly in Russia.
