Abstract:
The history and culture of the Alans occupy an exceptionally important place in the ancient and early medieval history of not only the south of Russia and the North Caucasus, but also the Western European region. The first works that asserted a genetic connection between the Ossetians and the Alans began to appear in the second half of the 18th century. Their authors were G.F. Miller, M.V. Lomonosov, I. Gottlieb, I. Gyldenshtedt, D. Montpere. In order to more objectively judge the state of knowledge of the Alan problem in the 19th century, it is necessary to consider the contribution made by a whole galaxy of scientists, including J. Klaproth, K. Müllenhoff, Saint-Martin, V. Miller and J. Kulakovsky, to the scientific understanding of the history of the Alans. This article attempts to consider the state of knowledge of the Alan problem up to and including the 19th century and the contribution made to its development by the works of famous scientists. The period of the 20th – early 21st centuries turned out to be a time of wide interest in the Alans among specialists in related humanities, which led to the formation of the scientific direction of «Alanistics», which unites all branches of knowledge about the Alans. Among the scientists- Alanists of that period were V.I. Abaev, F.Kh. Gutnov, V.A. Kuznetsov, S.N. Malakhov, A.A. Tuallagov and other distinguished names. One way or another, as an independent scientific field, Alanistics was formed primarily due to its «pioneers», who set the direction for the research of subsequent generations of scientists. We see the purpose and novelty of this article in revealing their basic role in the formation of this scientific direction. The principle of historicism was chosen as a methodological basis for writing the article.
