Abstract:
The paper examines the specifics of the relationships that developed between central periodicals, party and state bodies and public organizations of the North Ossetian ASSR in the context of the ideological campaigns of the first post-war years. The relevance of the topic is determined by the insufficient study in regional historiography of the problem of ideological control exercised by central mass media, in particular newspapers, in relation to the Soviet provinces in the second half of the 1940s – early 1950s. Based on a comprehensive analysis of diverse archival documents introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, as well as periodical press materials, the role of central periodicals as an instrument for the formation and provision of a unified ideological policy in the region is assessed. Particular attention is paid to studying the reaction of local authorities and creative associations to critical publications of central newspapers, as well as the consequences that followed. It is noted that the affiliation with the party and Soviet structures of the Center and the all-Union status of periodicals determined the availability of a significant administrative resource for the latter, which allowed them to exert a noticeable influence on the socio-political life of the republic. At the same time, it is emphasized that the influence of such an authoritative instrument of agitation and propaganda, aimed primarily at the assimilation of newly introduced ideological guidelines by the broad masses, was often leveled by certain costs of execution that existed at the local level (for example, serious problems with the distribution and sale of the press both among the population and among party workers). The source base of the study was the office documentation of the North Ossetian Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks), the Board of the Writers’ Union and the Board of the Union of Musicians of the Republic, deposited in the funds of the State Archive of Modern History of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, as well as materials from the central, regional and subregional periodicals.
