Abstract:
This research regards myths not as pre-existing entities, but shaped by social, historical, cultural, and psychological factors. The myths of our ancestors continue to resonate in contemporary societies because they encapsulate the desires of both ancient and modern human communities. Although myths often depict elements that are unattainable in the real world, they allow for the realization of unfulfilled dreams. This study employs the sociological theories of positivism and social determinism, as advanced by Emile Durkheim and Auguste Comte, to analyze the protagonists of the Narts’ epic. Durkheim suggested that humans possess limitless desires, which must be regulated through social oversight and the imposition of constraints. Society should act as a regulating force to satisfy human moral needs, akin to how the body satisfies physical needs. This concept is reflected in stories where myths restrain the desires of the protagonist – the brave, unmatched warrior – and elevate weaker characters to achieve their goals. The findings indicate that the hero’s birth often coincides with the death or absence of his father, compelling the hero to confront and overcome challenges related to his current limitations. The hero may seek revenge against or ally with a superior figure. Through the myth, the hero is able to fulfill his ununrealised desires and transform his limitations into strength and triumph. He achieves legendary growth within a matter of days or even hours, aided by talking animals and plants along his journey to victory. This transformation enables him to overcome adversaries and meet both individual and collective societal demands, all within the context of exaggerated and fantastical events.
