Abstract: The problem of population formation on the territory is determined by extralinguistic, interlinguistic and intralinguistic factors, revealing both the periods of toponymy development and the ethnogenesis of the ethnic group. When analyzing vocabulary with physical and geographical realities and natural conditions, the features of the relief and vegetation, toponymic positivity and historical data are significant. Areas are changeable in time and space; they have no continuous boundaries. Geographical names – witnesses of the past – store information about the language of those who lived in the past; linguistic means are used to judge the structure of an extinct language. The article attempts to provide a historical-geographical-linguistic explanation for the toponym Salugardan in the Alagir district of North Ossetia using an integrated approach. The work is based on the following idea: the formation and development of a toponym depend on internal and external migrations; Geographical names capture elements of social spheres, economic activity, geographical landscape, and the impact of the geographical environment, taking into account the ethnolinguistic composition of the population. Clarification of the etymology of the toponym Salugardan made it possible to reveal the linguistic layers that took part in the formation of the toponym in question. The study confirmed its descriptiveness; it was discovered that semantics in toponymy is often supplemented by an unambiguous and convincing connection with objective features of realities and geographical, concretehistorical confinement.
