MIRACULOUS MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION IN KARACHAY-BALKARIAN MAGICAL FAIRY-TALES AND THE NART EPOS

Gulieva, Farizat H.
Kavkaz Forum. 2024. Issue 20.
Abstract:
The article studies the peculiarities of functioning of miraculous objective realities in
Karachay-Balkarian magical fairy-tales and Nart legends in a comparative-contrastive key.
The object of scientific interest was miraculous means of transportation, movement. To
achieve the goals and objectives of the study, the method of continuous sampling, as well
as descriptive, axiological, comparative-contrastive and structural methods of analysis
were used in the work. It is noted, that in the category under consideration, two groups can
be conditionally distinguished: means of accelerating movement (magic transport) and
means of transferring objects in space. The first group in fairy-tale texts mainly consists
of objects of material culture (a miraculous cart, a flying carpet, etc.), but here we can also
include a number of animals (miraculous horses, white and black rams or snakes), dove
and eagle hides, as well as reservoirs, that serve as a kind of border and a point of transition
from one world to another. The Nart epos also mentions white and black rams and eagle
wings and hides. To them we can add the winged iron chariot of Debet and the wind horse
of Satanay. The second group in the Nart epos is represented only by a magical felt whip.
In fairy-tale texts their number is also small: a magical spoon and two pieces of wood,
used to move other magical artifacts. Also, in some cases, they are joined by wish-fulfilling
objects. Based on the conducted research, it is concluded, that the objective realities of
the group under consideration are not so numerous and are better represented and play
more important role in fairy-tales, where horses with superpowers are not the hero’s
indispensable companions. In addition, due to the specifics of the poetics of the Nartiada,
the heroic focus of the narrative, the motives of impossible tasks, obtaining, losing and re-
acquiring magical objects are not widespread in them.
