ROAD AND MORAL MATURING THEME IN OSSETIAN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE

Britaeva, Anzhela B.
Kavkaz Forum. 2024. Issue 20.
Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the image-symbol of the road in the Ossetian
children’s literature. The theme of the road is one of those key topics that are considered to
be enduring, those that invariably attract the attention of authors and literary critics with
their versatility. Road is not just a spatial movement, but a passage through the stages of
formation and maturation. The relevance of the research is due to the increased interest
in the problems of children’s literature, as well as the need for a comprehensive study of its
history and problems. The purpose of the study is to trace the transformation of the image
of the road from a folklore plot-forming constant to its various interpretations in modern
literature for children. The author’s vision of this «eternal image» is traced in the article
based on the works of Ossetian authors (T. Besaev, G. Bitsoev, A. Batyrov, G. Chedzhemov
etc.). The researcher has made an attempt to show for which task the image in question is
introduced by the authors into the canvas of an artistic work. The scientific novelty of the
work lies in the fact that for the first time in the history of the study of Ossetian children’s
literature, the peculiarities of interpretation of one of the significant images of folklore and
literature are revealed. As a result of the research, based on the comparative method of
analysis, the connection and continuity of traditions of works of oral folk art are confirmed:
fairy tales, Nart kadags (tales) and works of modern children’s literature, in which the road
is often a plot-forming element and the context of moral maturing, a symbol of overcoming
hardships, self-searching, spiritual growth. In the final part, the author formulated
conclusions indicating that in literary works, due to the fact that the authors significantly
depart from the folklore interpretation of the image in question, it acquires a philosophical
sound and, as a result, sometimes receives a completely different interpretation.
Theoretically and practically, this research will contribute to the development of the history
of Ossetian children’s literature, the study of its national specifics.
Keywords: Ossetian children’s literature, the archetype of the road, the motif of the road, the image-symbol of the road, folklore motifs in literature.
