PROBLEMS OF IRAN’S SOUTH CAUCASIAN POLICY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XXIst CENTURY

Abstract:
This article discusses the problems of the South Caucasian policy of Iran at the
beginning of the XXIst century. The relevance of the topic is enhanced by the fact
that) the South Caucasus is one of the priority areas of the foreign policy of the
Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI, which is the sphere of national interests of the Russian
Federation. Iran’s interests in this region are predetermined by many factors:
common history; territorial proximity; established connections; a promising
market for its products and technologies; an area rich in oil and other minerals;
the territory through which major transport communications pass. It is impossible
not to note the significance of the ties of confessional and ethnic affinity between
Iran and Azerbaijan, where the majority of the population belongs to the Shiite
branch of Islam. The area of ethnic and confessional kinship is also a potential
source of threats for both states. It is impossible not to note the specific geopolitical
and strategic position of Iran on the routes from Europe to Asia. In addition,
the role of the South Caucasus in the regional system of international relations
increased significantly in the 90s. last century, was relevant at the beginning of
the XXI century. and remains so to this day. This is connected, first of all, with the
development of Caspian energy resources, their transportation and the revival
of the Great Silk Road. The Islamic Republic of Iran strives to occupy its niche in
the political and economic space of the South Caucasus and, in this regard, is
pursuing an active foreign policy in the region. The study showed that it was at the
beginning of the XXIst century. The South Caucasian region has become one of
the most dangerous regions of the post-Soviet space due to the ongoing political
and military conflicts.
