IRANIAN LAYER OF BORROWED VOCABULARY IN THE DARGIN LANGUAGE

Yusupov, Khizri A.
Kavkaz Forum. 2026. Issue 26.
Abstract:

This article examines Iranian lexical borrowings in the Dargin language. The aim of the study is to identify lexical-thematic and lexical-semantic groups consisting of Iranianisms among Dargin loanwords. The relevance of this research is due to the fact that Dargin studies have not yet had any comprehensive, specialized works devoted to a detailed study of the thematic and structural groups of Iranian borrowings. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it is the first to examine the role of the Iranian layer of borrowed vocabulary in the development of synonymous relations in the Dargin language. The methodological and theoretical basis for the study are the works of Dagestani and Russian linguists. The material for the study was loanwords from Iranian languages, recorded in dictionaries and scholarly works. The following research methods were used: partial sampling, statistical data processing, lexical analysis, descriptive, comparative, and contrastive methods. Iranisms in Dargin emerged as a result of trade and economic ties with Iran. This is evidenced by the fact that the majority of loanwords are names related to trade, household items and products, as well as socio-political and religious terms. Over time, Iranisms underwent phonetic adaptation in accordance with the phonetic rules of the Dargin language. The results of the study of the Iranian layer of loanwords in Dargin are of interest for the development of the lexical composition of the Dargin literary language, are significant for the development of lexicology, and can be used in linguistic research and lexicographic work.
