REASONS AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE PEASANTS’ RELOCATION TO KABARDA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIXth – EARLY XXth CENTURIES

Kavkaz Forum. 2026. Issue 25.
Abstract:

The article is devoted to studying the process of Russian migration in the North Caucasus region, which intensified in the second half of the nineteenth century through the early twentieth century following the establishment of the Terek Region and its incorporation into the Russian Empire. The primary focus is on the reasons and conditions for resettlement that were determined by historical prerequisites for the migration of the Russian population to the area as well as an inherent desire among thousands of peasants to purchase inexpensive fertile lands in the Caucasus. The policy of the Russian government was inconsistent regarding this issue – ranging from active support to introducing restrictions and complete prohibitions – nevertheless providing settlers with legal assistance and limited material aid. An increase in the resettlement process became possible after the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the conclusion of the Caucasian War, and significant changes in the administrative structure of the region. Particular significance lies in identifying specific features of resettlement precisely within the territory of the Terek Region characterized by unique geographical location, natural-climatic conditions, and multiethnic composition of the population. Legislative acts of the Russian Government played a crucial role in regulating peasant resettlement. Special attention is given to the impact of agrarian and peasant reforms on agricultural development and economic growth in the Kabardian District during 1863-1869 and 1866-1867. The article substantiates the role of migratory flows in forming new Russian settlements in Kabarda, establishing social ties, cultural interaction, and structuring agricultural spaces in the region.
