Abstract:
This article examines the origins and social status of the Ossetian princely Kanukovs’ family from the Donifars community of North Ossetia. Along with the Kabanovs, Kobegkaevs, Naifonovs, and Khoranovs, they constituted a privileged class in Donifars. This historical and genealogical study of this family is part of a comprehensive study of privileged families in North Ossetia. The relevance of this work stems from the need to introduce new sources into scholarly circulation, allowing us to reconstruct the history of specific Ossetian families and trace the fates of their members. This study is based on archival sources, many of which are being published for the first time, as well as published materials by travelers and researchers, which facilitated the achievement of the stated objectives. The goal of the study was to locate and systematize information about a previously unknown branch of the Kanukovs’ family, including biographical data of its members and relevant photographic material. The study’s methodological basis was based on general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, and induction), as well as a comparative method that allowed for an assessment of the reliability of the historical sources used. Using documents discovered in the archives of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Georgia, the study demonstrates for the first time the role of representatives of the Kanukov family in the muhajirstvo, the migration of highlanders to the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the XIXth century. The study’s outcome was the reconstruction of the historical destinies of those members of the unexplored Gaguat branch of the Kanukovs who did not leave Ossetia. The study’s materials can serve as a significant complement to the established understanding of the Ossetian aristocracy and contribute to a more in-depth and updated study of the genealogy of privileged families in North Ossetian societies.
