This article provides a comparative analysis of translations of the war poetry of Ossetian poets Kh. Kaloev (1921-1943) and M. Kochisov (1920-1944) into Russian. The relevance of the study lies in the need for an objective assessment of the quality of translation interpretations, which shape the perception of national poetry in a non-native (Russian-language) cultural environment. The analysis is based on the original texts and their translations by S. Polikarpov, S. Botvinnik, N. Karpov, N. Orlova, T. Salamov, and other translators in the 1970s and 1980s. The study utilized methods of comparative, semantic-stylistic, and contextual analysis. This article examines key features of the poetics of both authors: genre distinctiveness (message poems, testaments, addresses, etc.), a system of symbolic images («blood,» «sun,» «fandyr»), the main motifs that reveal the ideological and thematic uniqueness of the analyzed texts, and their reflection in the translations. It has been established that translation strategies vary from a desire for semantic and figurative adequacy (S. Botvinnik, N. Orlova, T. Salamov) to a freer interpretation focused on ethnographic specifics (as opposed to the original) or adaptation to the traditions of Russian poetry (S. Polikarpov, N. Karpov). It has been demonstrated that, despite formal discrepancies and varying degrees of closeness to the original, all translations taken together achieve the main goal of conveying the tragic experience of the generation, captured in poetic words. The findings contribute to the theory and history of literary translation, as well as to the study of Ossetian literature during the Great Patriotic War.
