Sekinaev, Soslan A.
Kavkaz Forum. 2025. Issue 24.
Abstract:

The relevance of this study is due to the insufficient exploration of the role of the Terek Region during the First World War, despite its strategic significance as a border area of the Russian Empire. The war had a considerable impact on the socio-economic and political development of the region; however, these processes remain poorly studied in contemporary historiography. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the comprehensive use of previously untapped or little-studied archival sources, statistical data, and periodical press materials to identify the causes and mechanisms of social destruction in the Terek Region during the First World War. This approach allows filling existing gaps in the study of the influence of wartime hardships on the social structure of the region and broadens the understanding of the regional specifics of this historical process. The aim of the research is to identify the characteristics of the functioning of the Terek Region under wartime conditions, including mobilization processes, economic transformations, and interethnic relations. The study employs historical-systematic, comparative-historical, and statistical methods, ensuring the reliability of the results obtained. During the research, it was established that the First World War exacerbated social contradictions in the region, contributed to the militarization of the economy, and activated national movements. In the Terek Region, as in other areas, the perception of the events of the war and revolution was severely distorted, leading to the formation of myths about the roles of local heroes and feats. At the same time, thanks to access to archival materials and historical sources, it became possible to gain a more objective understanding of the events that took place, restore real facts, and comprehend what actually happened in the Terek Region during this complex and pivotal period. The conclusions drawn expand the understanding of the regional specifics of the wartime period and can be used in further research on the history of the North Caucasus.
