COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SEMANTIC STRUCTURE OF THE VERB CÆWYN / CÆWUN ‘TO GO, TO WALK‘ IN THE IRON AND DIGOR DIALECTS OF THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract:

This article presents a comparative analysis of the semantic structure of the verb cæwyn / cæwun ‘to go, to walk‘ in the Iron and Digor dialects of Ossetian. The relevance of this study stems primarily from the growing interest of both Russian and foreign linguists in various aspects of Ossetian grammar. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the semantic systems of the Iron and Digor dialects is necessary for solving a number of theoretical problems. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time, an attempt has been made to comprehensively analyze the structural and semantic properties of the core verb of motion cæwyn / cæwun ‘to go, to walk‘ in the Iron and Digor dialects of Ossetian. The aim of this study is to comparatively describe the semantics of the verb cæwyn / cæwun ‘to go, to walk‘ in the Iron and Digor dialects of Ossetian. The following methods were used in the study: definitional-semantic, semantic-componential, semantic-syntactic, comparative, informant surveys, questionnaires. As a result of the study, the semantic structure of the verb cæwyn / cæwun ‘to go, to walk‘ in the Ossetian language was determined, which includes, in addition to the main nominative meaning «movement / displacement in space and time», many secondary and context-dependent meanings; the semantic and syntactic properties of the verb were identified taking into account its functioning in utterances; the verbal vocabulary indicating the mode of movement and having the seme «movement on a hard surface» was defined and systematized; the degree of divergence in the semantic structure of the verb cæwyn / cæwun ‘to go, to walk‘ in the Iron and Digor dialects of the Ossetian language, characterized by insignificant functional and contextual differences; It was revealed that in terms of verbs indicating the mode of movement, Digor is distinguished by the presence of a larger number of verb units and a more expanded semantics in some of them.
