FROM THE HISTORY OF LITERARY TRANSLATION IN OSSETIAN LITERATURE OF THE LATE XIXth – FIRST THIRD OF THE XXth CENTURY: CHARACTERS AND PRINCIPLES OF TEXT REPRODUCTION

Dzaparova, Elizaveta B.
Kavkaz Forum. 2025. Issue 24.
Abstract:

This article is the first attempt to examine the translation process in Ossetian literature from the late XIXth to the first third of the XXth century. In particular, using a diachronic analysis, the author examines the basic principles of translating the most prominent representatives of intercultural dialogue during the reviewed period. The author also characterizes the methods proposed by translators of church and folklore texts, which subsequently became the basis for transferring literary works from Russian into Ossetian. The analysis presented in the work provides grounds for identifying the following principles dominating the translation practice of Ossetian translators. 1. Literal transfer of the literary text, ignoring its aesthetic value. In the initial period of literary translation, clergymen with experience in literal translation of religious literature tended to copying the original. 2. Adaptation of the original by shortening or expanding the content, changing the form of the work in order to achieve a pragmatic impact on the recipient. The Ossetian text is characterized as a free (uninhibited) translation (translation-paraphrase, translation-imitation), in places satisfying the requirements of the original work, written «based on» the translated text. An adapted approach to the original was most common in translation practice from the late XIXth to the first third of the XXth century. 3. A foreignizing strategy, opposed to domestication, is adopted by translators who focus on the source culture and reproduce the characteristics of the original. Despite the reader’s difficulty in perceiving the translated text, which can be explained by certain intercultural differences (for example, the mechanical transfer of realia words without explanatory context), translators strive to convey the foreign reality reflected by the author in the original. This study aims to fill the gap that exists in Ossetian literary studies regarding the development and evolution of literary translation.
