Abstract:
The socio-political upheavals of the late 1980-s and early 1990-s led to a radical transformation of all spheres of life in the Soviet state. As a result of the transformations, a number of industries, including the cultural sphere, found themselves in a deep crisis. However, there was a downside: new forms of realizing creative potential emerged, taste needs changed, and demands in mass culture grew. Despite this, the uncontrolled and spontaneous nature of the reforms revealed a number of problems, creating new challenges for the cultural sector. Today, one of the most important strategies for national security of the country is the protection of historical memory, traditional spiritual and moral values, and culture. The complex of difficulties and challenges that the cultural sphere faced during the period under review can be conditionally divided into nationwide and specific, characteristic of a separate region. The article analyzes archival data, materials from republican periodicals, including interviews with cultural figures, their journalistic articles, letters, etc. First-hand information helped to identify key problems in the field of culture in North Ossetia, its real situation, and current pressing issues that required immediate solutions. Certainly, each of the above aspects is the subject of a separate study. In addition, some problems (for example, the preservation and development of the native language) remain relevant today. Thus, the reconstruction of the recent historical past and research analysis will contribute to a deeper understanding of the cause-and-effect relationships of the topical issues addressed in the article and the prevention of the recurrence of crisis scenarios. The author of the article pursued the goal of providing an overview analysis of the state of culture in North Ossetia in the 90-s of the XXth century – early XXIst century with the identification of a set of priority areas. Scientific novelty lies in the research based on materials (archival documents, journalistic articles, interviews, letters from cultural figures – active participants in the processes under study) that have not previously been introduced into scientific circulation.
