Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the socio-political views of Akhmed Tembulatovich Tsalikov, an Ossetian writer, publicist, and one of the leaders of the Russian Muslim movement during the years of revolutions and the civil war of 1917–1920. The focus is on the cultural, confessional, and political position of A. Tsalikov, his vision of state unity and cultural construction in imperial Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, the period of constitutional reforms. A. Tsalikov defined himself within the framework of the dichotomy of imperial projects that emerged in public thought and the actions of government bodies: assimilation and “Eurasian”. A description is given of each of the projects related to the future of culture and confessional identity of the Muslim peoples of Russia. The journalism of A. Tsalikov is in line with the fruitful «Eurasian» discourse of the Muslim intelligentsia of Russia, where the Muslim community of peoples was understood as an integral part of the Russian state «body», while at the same time being a special historical and cultural community within the empire. The journalism of A. Tsalikov, his book «The Caucasus and the Volga Region» formulate a conceptual model of state unity, within the framework of which Russian Muslims will be able to preserve their confessional and cultural identity. The journalist characterizes the directions and forms of the struggle of the imperial authorities aimed at neutralizing the confessional identity of Muslims. The rejection and opposition of the authorities caused attempts to modernize and renew the way of life of traditional ethnic groups on their own confessional basis – the Muslim movement for the opening of new-method schools (Jadidism). For A. Tsalikov, the integration of Muslim peoples into the imperial community was associated with the modernization and consolidation of the Islamic society of Russia, its awareness of the need for development and education.
