ABOUT TURKIC LOANS IN THE OSSETIAN TOPONYMY

Besolova, Elena B.
Kavkaz Forum. 2024. Issue 19.
Abstract:
The article is devoted to borrowed toponyms, which are not only a product of
deep archaism, but also evidence of contacts between Iranian-speaking people and
speakers of Turkic languages. The presence of common borrowings in languages
reflects both the relationship of language contacts, their nature, and the duration
and conditions for them created by time, trade and economic prerequisites and
political factors. If we proceed from the position that the situation of bilingualism
is the main linguistic condition for language contacts, then it is extremely
important to determine the linguistic elements and models that have penetrated
into the native language from a foreign language, to identify the direction of
development of the designated contacts, to determine whether they are the result
of bilingualism or a remnant of a superstrate or substrate. A significant number of
Turkic toponyms preserve information both about the constant change of people
living in this territory, who left their mark in tenacious toponyms, and about
close and long-term contacts of the Ossetians with the surrounding peoples –
Caucasian and newcomers. The study of toponyms is interesting due to the lexical
reflection of the properties of geographical objects, the issues of the origin and
evolution of toponyms, their forms, semantics, symbolism, synonymy, etc.; they
have significant potential for studying the features of phonetics, morphology,
historical linguistics, etc. In a word, for a linguist, toponyms are essential for the
integration of geography, history and language, and this is excellent material for
differentiation against the background of integration. The inventory of toponyms,
carried out by A.Dz. Tsagaeva, Z.D. Tskhovrebova and Yu.A. Dzitsoity is a laborintensive
and painstaking work that accumulates knowledge of geographical
and linguistic sciences not only in the aspect of regional studies, but also language
problems: the history of language, derivation, reconstruction of the original forms
of words, proper names, etc.
Keywords: the Ossetian language, isogloss, language contamination, Turkic languages.
