Kavkaz Forum. 2024. Issue 18. Abstract: The article deals with the inflectional category of the plurality in the Ossetian language. Language material from the Iron and Digoron dialects is used for the analysis. The relevance of the problem under consideration lies in the fact that studying the category of number, especially irregular forms of plural that fall outside the framework of regular grammatical patterns, is of great importance not only for Ossetian linguistics, but also for the general theory of language. This study is the first attempt of a comparative analysis of irregular plural forms in the Iron and Digoron dialects of the Ossetian language, which defines its novelty. The purpose of this study is to determine the regularity/irregularity of plural forms in the Digoron and Iron dialects of the Ossetian language. In the work the following linguistic research methods were used: descriptive, comparative, and the method of internal reconstruction of dialect lexis in order to identify more archaic forms. The research material was the language material collected during dialectological expeditions undertaken by the author in 2015-2018-s. The study showed, that despite the fact that the grammatical category of number in the Ossetian language manifests itself quite regularly, there are a number of forms that fall outside the scope of morphological pattern. The irregular forms identified during the study are of particular importance for the diachronic study of the Ossetian language. Thus, now almost completely archaic forms of plurality with the insertion - æл (only Ir. мадæлтæ, фыдæлтæ, æрвадæлтæ / Dig. маддæлтæ, фиддæлтæ, æрваддæлтæ have been preserved), may be an indicator that this formant could represent forms of collective meaning for both dialects of Ossetian language (Dig. дзурдтæлтæ, цихтæлтæ, сугъдтæлтæ).
