TERMS OF FELT PRODUCTS IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE
Abaeva, Fatima O.
Kavkaz Forum. 2023. Issue 15.
Abstract: This article is devoted to the description of the rich terminology for processing
wool raw materials in the Ossetian language. It examines the lexical-semantic
group “felt vocabulary”, specifically the thematic subgroup “words denoting
felt objects”. Processing unspun sheep wool by felting is one of the oldest textile
techniques in traditional farming. Lexical material, united by the general
semantics “felt products”, contains the names of household items (bedding,
home decoration, horse equipment, etc.); also includes names of clothing and
footwear (hats, outerwear, etc.). The analysis of terms obtained by continuous
sampling from certain dictionaries of the Ossetian language is carried out using
structural-semantic and component research methods. As a result of the study, the
structural features and component characteristics of the vocabulary associated
with felting were identified; In the thematic group under study, the presence of
a significant primordial linguistic layer related to traditional Ossetian arts and
crafts was determined. The isolated structural features of the terminology we are
considering revealed the main term-forming formant nymæt, since the largest
number of terms ended up with it in the presented lexical-semantic subgroup.
The noun nymæt denotes an inanimate object, material, with the addition of a
suffix. -yn forms a suffixal adjective - nymætyn, as a result there is a term with
the meaning “made or consisting of what is called a motivating word.” Structural-
semantic analysis of the terminology system associated with the names of felt
objects in the Ossetian language revealed the presence of simple single-basic
term-words, double-basic term-words, as well as complex terms consisting of two
or more words. The etymological characteristics of the vocabulary of felt products
revealed the presence of mainly original words.
Keywords: the Ossetian language, vocabulary of material management, lexical-semantic group, wool processing, felt.
