Kavkaz Forum. 2022. Issue 10.
Abstract: Weapons, equipment and equipment of a warrior are one of the constituent
elements of the military culture of the people. They are a demonstration of the
level of development of military affairs among the ethnic group and reflect
its contacts with the outside world. In a comprehensive study of the military
culture of the Ossetians, it is advisable to study each item of weapons in detail.
Since ancient times, long-bladed weapons have traditionally been present in
the Ossetian armament complex. In ancient times, these were long horseman’s
swords, in the Middle Ages – broadswords and sabers, and in modern times –
checkers. In the Ossetians’ view, long-bladed weapons are not only an item
of armament, but also one of the main attributes of a man and a warrior. For
this reason, a comprehensive study of long-bladed weapons is very relevant.
The considered kind of weapon is widely represented in the Nart epic of the
Ossetians called «card». This work is devoted to identifying and establishing
what the word «card» sword or saber means in the epic. The scientific novelty
of the study lies in the fact that this is the first attempt to comprehensively
consider the problem posed. The subject of the analysis are the Nart legends
of the Ossetians, the data of archeology on long-bladed weapons, starting
from the era of antiquity and ending with the beginning of the XIX century,
as well as the data of the Ossetian language on weapons items. The study
revealed the structural features of the «card»-a, which are reflected in the texts
of Ossetian Nart legends. Based on archaeological sources, the time of the
appearance and existence of the sword and saber among the ancestors of the
Ossetians has been revealed. The results of the study can be used in research
and educational activities on the military culture of the peoples of the Russian
Federation in antiquity and the Middle Ages.
